Fourteen

When I finally came to my senses, I was no longer with Chloe at the enchanted spot near the lake. I found myself in a small room with an I.V. hanging on a metal stand near my bed. The sight sent me into a panic, and I sat up with a gasp.

Chloe’s exclamation echoed mine, and I turned to her with wide eyes as I clasped my throbbing head. Something had gone horribly wrong with my spell, and I was afraid to ask what. “What happened?”

My friend sent me a look that was half concern and half apology. She leaned close to whisper, though no one else was in the room. “You passed out while doing the rain spell.”

Don’t ask me why, but I glanced down to make sure all my body parts were intact. “I fainted?”

She nodded repeatedly. “All the water in your hands evaporated, but then you started acting weird, and you asked me for a drink of water.”

Chloe slid to the edge of her seat, scooting as close to me as she could get. “I think your spell might have been taking water from you, too.”

I widened my eyes in alarm. “What?”

She gave me a sad frown and a much smaller nod. “When you arrived at the clinic, they said you were severely dehydrated.” Tears clouded her eyes. “Oh, Evie. I’m so sorry. I never should have pushed you to do another spell.”

I narrowed my gaze and shook my head, rejecting her apology. “It wasn’t your fault. It was mine. I shouldn’t have dabbled when I obviously didn’t have all the information I needed about that spell.”

She dropped her stiff shoulders, but still didn’t seem completely satisfied. “I guess we both learned a hard and scary lesson.”

I lifted my hand to my throbbing temple. “My head is killing me.”

Chloe reached out and patted my arm. “That’s a sure sign of dehydration. They’ve been administering fluids for a while now. That should help. The nurse said when you woke up, you’d be exhausted, too.”

The moment Chloe suggested it, weariness hit, and I dropped back against my pillow. “Yeah. I’m not sure I’ve ever felt so drained.”

“As soon as you’re done with this I.V., the nurse said you could go home if you were awake but that you should rest. Caden said he’d drive you.”

I widened my eyes in alarm. “Caden? He knows?”

She sent me an apologetic grimace. “I didn’t know who else to contact after you fainted. If you hadn’t been practicing magic, I would have called the police emergency line. But I worried you might have needed some kind of extra care, you know?”

I released a heavy sigh. “What makes you think Caden would know what to do?”

She lifted one shoulder and let it drop. “He knows you’re a witch, and you did spells in front of him before. He might have some idea.”

I considered her response and waved away her apology. “You’re right. You needed to do something, and I guess he helped.”

Chloe leaned closer and gripped my hand.
